Overview
This five-part course is designed for those who have either completed the introduction course or beginner workshop, or already have the basic fundamentals of photography under their command. In each two-hour session, we’ll focus primarily on elevating the quality of your images, while learning new techniques and perspectives. Accompanied with teaching are examples, slideshows, and demonstrations. Homework is assigned, which is essential to your progress. Your results will be analysed and reviewed during the following lesson.
What you will learn
- Consistency: depth of field, movement, visual characteristics, colour and black & white, camera settings, focal length, composition, lighting and your personal approach to making images
- Image quality: digital file types, dynamic range, optimal exposure, auto focus systems, lens quality, lighting, image style settings, post-production options
- Colour photography: white balance, saturation, hue, lighting for colour, interpreting images in colour
- Black and white photography: texture and pattern, shape and form, lighting, principles of design, RAW processing for black and white files, practical decisions for creating high quality black and white photography
- Flash photography: flash and camera settings, the flash aesthetic, contrast and shadows, basic flash lighting techniques (direct, diffused, zoom, off camera, multiple flashes), flash look, ambient lighting with flash
- Post-production: developing RAW files, contrast and toning techniques, colour management, basic retouching tools.

- Classes 2-5: Review of homework (each class)
- Homework: the following class presentations you will put into practice during your homework assignment covering topics such as portraiture, reportage, landscape, purely aesthetic or street photography amongst other genres
- Class 1: Developing consistency in your picture taking techniques and aesthetic style, learning how to experiment, editing to select your strongest work
- Class 2: Image quality and shooting for best file results
- Class 3: Colour and black and white photography
- Class 4: Introduction to flash photography
- Class 5: Introduction to post-production
